  Articol:   THE “CHALCEDONY” OF TRESTIA, MARAMUREŞ (ROMANIA) – REVISITED.

  Rezumat:  Ever since its first documentary mention by Benkö (1786), the famous blue silica from Trestia, Maramureş (Romania) has been a subject of lively debate and controversy, especially in what concerned: 1) its source and host rock, 2) the origin of its cubic crystals, and 3) the origin of its characteristic blue color. In view of this historic discussion, it is no wonder that the occurrence from Trestia has been quoted under many names: saphirine, lussatite, cubosilicite, chalcedonite, chalcedony, quartzine, opal, agate etc., even though it consists almost exclusively of quartz with variable crystal size (Fig. 1). Submicroscopic traces of CT-opal are present as well. The paper reviews the main issues of controversy following the paper by Benkö and adds new mineralogical insights.
